I finally stopped quitting my routines after a bad workday by giving myself a "bare minimum" version for tired days
Honestly for years I had this frustrating all-or-nothing habit where if I couldn't do my full 45 minute workout or sit down for a full hour of study after work, I'd just do nothing at all. I'd come home tired after a long shift, skip one night, feel guilty the next day, skip again, and suddenly three weeks were gone.
A couple months ago I started doing something super simple that finally stuck for me. Instead of having just one daily goal for a habit, I wrote down three versions of it on an index card on my desk.
Basically I have a bare-minimum version for nights when I'm completely wiped out (takes like 2 minutes, literally just putting my running shoes on and walking to the end of the street, or opening my notes and reading one page), a normal 15-minute version for regular workdays, and a full hour version only for weekends when I actually slept well.
The deal I made with myself is that I'm allowed to do the 2-minute lazy version whenever I'm exhausted, and it still counts as keeping the promise to myself. It sounds almost too small to matter, but not breaking the chain on rough Tuesdays has kept me going for almost three months straight without a single multi-week crash.
Does anyone else do a scaled-down version of their habits on rough days, or how do you keep from throwing the whole week away when you're tired?
Why blank to-do lists always made me procrastinate, and the sticky note trick that helped me start faster
Whenever I sit down in the morning with a blank notebook or an empty planner page asking what my priorities are, my brain completely stalls out. Ten different things feel equally urgent, and having to figure out what to do and how to start at the same time usually ends with me scrolling on my phone for half an hour instead.
About two months ago I stopped keeping long to-do lists altogether. Now before I go to bed, I just write one fill-in-the-blank sentence on a sticky note and leave it on my keyboard: "Tomorrow counts as a win if I spend 15 minutes on [x] before lunch, and the very first 2-minute step is [y]."
When I sit down with my coffee in the morning, I don't have to plan my whole life or look at a giant list of chores. I just do that one tiny 2-minute step and give myself permission to write a messy first draft just to get moving. Taking the decision-making out of the first couple minutes has helped me so much with morning procrastination.
What small tricks do you guys use to get past the first two minutes when your brain refuses to start a task?
What is the smallest "2-minute habit" or daily rule you started that ended up making the biggest difference in your life?

For me it was giving myself a 2-minute "bare minimum" version of my habits for tired workdays. Whenever I come home exhausted or sleep badly, I'm allowed to just put my running shoes on and walk to the end of the driveway, or read just one page before bed, and it still counts. Having an embarrassingly small version for rough days kept my routine alive through busy weeks that normally would have made me quit for months.
I kept abandoning digital workbooks on busy workdays, so I built a simple 3-speed habit web app that shrinks your daily prompts when you're tired
Hey everyone,
I wanted to share a side project I've been building over the past month. Every time I bought a digital habit workbook or PDF planner in the past, I'd use it for four days, have one exhausting workday where I couldn't face a blank worksheet, and never open the file again.
So I took our collection of 17 habit and focus workbooks (TBPOYL) and built a lightweight browser web app to go with them. When you open it in the morning, you pick how much energy you actually have that day (5 minutes if you're wiped out, 15 minutes for a normal workday, or 30 minutes when you're well rested), and the daily prompts and fill-in-the-blank starter sentences automatically shrink or expand so you don't break your streak. I also added a simple Web Audio brown noise and 10Hz focus sound generator right in the page so I wouldn't get sucked into YouTube looking for background audio.
Day 1 of the 90-Day Habit System is completely free to try in your browser without any login or email signup, and we're testing $2.99 pricing on the full books for launch month.

Why do 90% of professional development books and planners sit unfinished after Week 2?
Because static pages don't adapt when you have a brutal Tuesday.
Over the past month, we re-engineered our entire 17-volume library at TBPOYL (covering Deep Work, 90-Day Habit Architecture, Executive ADHD Systems, Wearable HRV Calibration, and AI Workflows) and paired every book with a live Interactive Coaching Web Studio.
When you open the studio in the morning:
1. You select your honest biological battery: Floor (5m), Target (15m), or Stretch (30m).
2. Every prompt, example, and starter template dynamically scales to match your bandwidth so you never break your continuity streak.
3. Built-in 10Hz Alpha neuroacoustic soundscapes and a Socratic "I'm Stuck" rescue panel eliminate task-initiation friction in under 60 seconds.
Day 1 of The 90-Day Habit System is 100% free to test-drive in your browser, and for the next 30 days we have unlocked every full 90-day book + guided studio for $2.99 USD (or the complete 9-Book Executive Vault for $14.99 USD).

Hi HN, I built TBPOYL Coaching Studio after noticing that static PDF/EPUB workbooks suffer from massive drop-off whenever a reader hits a low-energy day or blank-page paralysis.
Technically, the entire Coaching Studio (coach.html) is a zero-dependency, offline-first PWA (<160KB single-file architecture) featuring:
- A dynamic "3-Speed Energy Dial" (Floor / Target / Stretch) that transforms every prompt, worked example, and 1-click starter template based on cognitive bandwidth.
- A pure Web Audio API DSP synthesizer generating real-time 10Hz Alpha binaural beats + filtered brown noise, 40Hz Gamma pulses, and 528Hz Solfeggio chimes with zero external audio files.
- A Socratic "I'm Stuck" rescue drawer for executive dysfunction, a 90-day identity heatmap, and client-side Markdown portfolio + HTML5 Canvas PNG certificate compilation.
Day 1 of The 90-Day Habit System is 100% free to test-drive in your browser with no login required, and we're running a 30-day $2.99 experiment on the full 90-day books + studio access at https://tbpoyl.vercel.app. Would love your feedback!
